Radio Frequency Identification (RFID) has been established more and more in logistics. Falling costs and constantly improved technology increases the number of companies using RFID in logistics significantly.
In this context, it is particularly important that software in use can handle RFID based processes. In combination with Auto-ID Infrastructure (AII), EWM supports the use of RFID in all common processes such as goods receipt and goods issue. EWM uses AII to communicate with RFID hardware such as the readers. It doesn't matter whether the reader is a mobile device or static device such as a gate.
In general two deployment scenarios are distinguished:
Slap&Ship Scenario and Integrated RFID Scenario
Scenario I: Slap & Ship
Slap & Ship (printing and attaching RFID tags) has its primary focus on goods issue processes. This type of solution can be implemented faster as the integrated scenario because SAP AII can be operated as a standalone system independent from EWM. Implementation costs are reduced by pre-configured processes and standard reports. Supported business processes are tag-picking, tag-attachment, picking and creation of delivery notes.
Scenario II: Integrated Processes with RFID
The integrated scenario has a wider impact on business processes. RFID technology is more integrated into business processes supporting not only shipment but also all other logistical processes. The integrated scenario scenario hence provides higher potential to optimize inventory, internal processes and increase transparency in comparison to the Slap & Ship Scenario.
